GEORGE TOWN: Citing sections from the state legislative assembly Standing Orders was the "order" of the day at the state legislative assembly sitting, which resulted in the Speaker having to intervene several times to bring the House to order.

Carpenter escapes the gallows

GEORGE TOWN: A 47-year-old carpenter, who was charged with trafficking ganja six years ago, escaped the gallows after the High Court discharged him yesterday. Judge Datuk Abdul Halim Aman said he had to dismiss Yuszaidi Md Yusoff without calling for his defence because the prosecution proffered contradicting evidence. Yuszaidi, who was represented by R.S.N. Rayer, was accused of trafficking at the rest area of a Chinese temple near Jalan Mak Mandin on Jan 22, 2003.

GEORGE TOWN: The 420 German companies in Malaysia which employ more than 35,000 workers, plan to maintain their operations in this country despite the global economic slowdown, its envoy said.
"Even though they are suffering, many are streamlining and consolidating their operations. However, there are no plans to relocate or close operations in Penang," he said during a courtesy call on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. Gruber described the 35,000 jobs in the German companies as innovative and well paying.
